Slow and steady

We all need to go through things slowly when we are learning something new. For your little ones, almost everything is new, so we need to remember not to race through it.

One of the main reasons singing and rhyming are so amazing for your child’s development is that they slow down the natural rhythm of your speech, stretching out sounds and emphasising the boundaries or gaps between syllables, words and sentences, making it a whole lot easier to learn their meaning and how to repeat them.

Next time you decide to belt out a tune with your baby, sing it slowly – even though it might feel silly. Before you know it your child will be singing along with you! Better yet, pause to wait for your child to join in with the words or actions, which also helps to learn and remember the lyrics and tune.
